On 20 April, Burkina Faso’s government foiled a foreign-backed coup attempt against Traoré. Following this there has been a wave of solidarity and anti-imperialist protests calling for Hands off Traoré, Hands off the Sahel, Get out of Africa!
There is a straight line that runs from the formation of this Confederation to the pan-African sentiments that shaped the anti-colonial movements in the Sahel over 60 years ago.
The ICJ found the accusation that Israel is conducting a genocide against the Palestinians of Gaza “plausible” and called upon Israel to “take all measures within its power to prevent the commission of all acts” that are genocidal.
Germany is backing Israel, against South Africa’s case at the ICJ. Namibia has roundly condemned Germany, given the genocide it committed in the south of Africa.

On September 16, the governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger created the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
