The Socialist Campaign Group of MPs has published a statement calling for an end to the US blockade of Cuba and rejecting calls for foreign intervention into Cuba. The statement and its signatories is set out below.
The current situation in Cuba is causing real suffering for the Cuban people with serious shortages of food, medicine and power supplies.
This emergency is the result of the ongoing US blockade, the additional 243 sanctions imposed by the Trump administration, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Any calls for foreign intervention in Cuba for so-called humanitarian reasons are dangerous and disingenuous.
The quickest and easiest intervention would be for the US to lift its unilaterally imposed and inhumane near 60-year blockade.
We welcome the UK’s vote in June at the United Nations where 184 countries voted for an end to the Blockade with just 2 countries opposed.
We call on President Biden to make good on his campaign promises and immediately suspend the US sanctions to allow the Cuban people themselves to overcome the current difficulties.
