The recent outburst of Victor Orban, President of Hungary claimimg Hungary was “the last bastion against the Islamisation of Europe,” is yet another example of rising Islamophobia in Europe. Furthermore nothing could be further from the truth. Terrorist attacks in Europe emanating from ISIS or linked organisation are a huge problem and action is needed to stop these attacks.
Tory government policies and the drive towards Brexit are whipping up new levels of racism in Britain. As living standards fall the finger of blame is pointed at migrants and Muslims. The aim is to sow social divisions that weaken opposition to the economic attacks.

In September a racist and Islamophobic campaign was whipped up in some sections of the media regarding a child from a Christian background being placed in the foster care of a Muslim family. The issue has been discussed as a “clash of civilisations” as though placing a Christian child in the care of a Muslim family is a threat to Christianity and the western world.

The election of Donald Trump as America’s 45th president has provoked many responses, from outright rage and protest in many urban centres through to resignation, acceptance and accommodation to the result on the part of the DNC establishment. Opponents have correctly characterised his campaign as a right wing populist call to arms aimed at mobilising rural and sub urban white communities against immigrants, Muslims, black and other minority groups around a reactionary conservative agenda. However, in order to understand this vote in its full significance it is necessary to take a longer, historic view of its place in the unfolding of US politics.

The entire Tory party conference was a jarring tune played on a racist dog whistle. By contrast, Jeremy Corbyn’s Leader’s speech to Labour Party Conference set out the opposite approach and challenged the wave of xenophobia and racism that has swept the country since the Brexit referendum outcome.
