Britain plays only a minor role in the Ukraine conflict, in line with its reduced status as an imperial and military power. But that does not in any way remove its responsibility for the death and destruction now taking place in the Ukraine.
Do the Ukraine war and the action of the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom spell the end of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency? Even if the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine reach an agreement there will be fallout for the dollar.
The war in Ukraine has drawn a clear line of divide among political forces on a global scale. The first line, strong among progressive forces in the Global South, and socialist or socialist oriented countries, rightly analyses that the fundamental cause of the war is the thirty-year-old US policy of aggressive expansion of NATO into Eastern Europe. The second line is in the imperialist/Global North countries, including unfortunately parts of the left, which supports NATO’s blaming of the war on Russia.
Russia is not going to occupy Ukraine. The purpose of the operation is the liberation of Ukraine from the Nazis and its neutrality (refusal to join NATO). The tactics of the Russian troops is, while attacking military facilities, to minimize the casualties among civilian population and Ukrainian military, to avoid destruction of civilian infrastructure.
The overthrow of the democratically elected president of Ukraine in 2014 unleashed an assault on the rights of the Russian minority in Ukraine over the subsequent eight years.
This attack on the rights of the Russian minority in Ukraine became a state-sanctioned policy. Opposition to that policy was depicted as treachery and treated as such.
The war in Ukraine could be ended extremely rapidly by:
• Making it clear Ukraine will not enter NATO.
• By acceptance of the rights of the Russian speaking population of East Ukraine.
These are the policies that the left should support.
