The government of an advanced industrialised country may choose to engineer a sharp rise in unemployment in an attempt to restore profitability, or it may choose to try to cut wages. But both stratagems entail high risk. Combining the two is exceptionally high risk. Under the cloak of the public health crisis which their own policies have helped to create, the current government is attempting such a strategy.

The campaign to defend Corbyn is vital for the entire left. Corbynism will be crucial in the battles ahead, to block the government’s catastrophic response to the pandemic, to oppose the enormous austerity offensive already under way, to fight the disastrous effects of Brexit, to fight resurgent racism and many other issues.
The British trade union movement is currently experiencing some turmoil and changes as the offensive against the working class intensifies and the leadership of a number of unions is due for election.
Within the group of advanced industrialised countries, the UK economy is set to be one of the most badly hit by the crisis. This relatively worse performance is entirely due to entirely policy choices.
The government neither has the infection rate under control, nor a strategy to eliminate it, and therefore zero prospect of a successful economic recovery on any basis at all.
