Labour should unite around membership of the Single Market

It is clear, and becoming increasingly publicly evident, that in the coming period the living standards of the British population and British workers cannot be maintained without membership of the European Single Market. The inflation that will be created by the plunging pound will significantly cut living standards, while refusal of companies to invest without free access to a European market which is many times bigger than any UK one will lead to heavy job losses. The significantly lower economic growth that will result will put further pressure on social spending.

The Corbyn leadership of the Labour party is the most important development on the left in Britain for generations and should be wholeheartedly supported by all socialists and the left. However, due to the cavalier behaviour of the previous Tory leadership under Cameron, this Labour leadership is faced with grappling with an equally momentous and complex political crisis resulting from the vote in favour of Brexit.

Brexit is the most important issue facing Britain. If Brexit goes ahead it will have major negative repercussions on the British economy and society for at least a generation. How the labour movement, including the Corbyn leadership of the Labour Party, responds to this crisis is therefore decisive. How the Labour leadership responds to Brexit will largely determine whether it will be able to advance electorally and whether the Corbyn leadership maintains and sustains the progressive wave of primarily young people into the Labour Party that have allowed him to twice win the leadership.

Corbyn’s policies to raise living standards can secure victory for Labour

The attempt of the right wing to oust Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader has had a negative effect upon Labour’s standing in opinion polls. YouGov polling on 25/26 April had Labour on 33 per cent, Tories on 30 per cent, UKIP on 20 per cent and LibDems on 6 per cent. The YouGov poll for 25/26 July had the Tories on 40 per cent, Labour on 28 per cent, UKIP on 13 per cent, and Lib Dems on 8 per cent.
