Government in difficulty over the NHS

17th May 2011 Socialist Action 0

By Nicky Dempsey

The first serious political difficulty for the current government rose from the student mobilisation against rising tuition fees and the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance. The government pressed on regardless – and produced a collapse in the vote for the LibDems at the recent local elections largely because they have been seen to betray a specific pre-election promise.

Marxism and the Economic Crisis

27th April 2011 Socialist Action 0

By Nicky Dempsey

All societies based on social classes tend to produce surplus value, to a greater or less extent. The character of the society may be determined by which class receives the bulk of the surplus.

The economic and financial crisis that became apparent in 2007 and 2008 was located primarily in the imperialist centres, led by the United States. The crisis was engendered by a crisis of profitability, a reduction in the surplus available to the capitalist class. Economic policy since that time has been designed to restore as far as possible the greater proportion of that surplus to the capitalist class in the imperial centres.

Drop cuts – not bombs!

The lies and hypocrisy of the Tory-led government on the cuts has been made crystal clear by the military assault on Libya. This is financed without a second thought, but we are told the country is broke, the money has ‘run-out’ and that our services, benefits, wages and jobs must all be cut to pay for the crisis. This same hypocrisy is being peddled in the US, France and the other imperialist countries participating in this war.
