All the evidence on sanctions upon Iran demonstrate that women suffer an increased burden in this invisible war. Those who claim to aid Iranian women by supporting sanctions are acting as oppressors of Iranian women.
The new party’s arrival on the political scene can radically change the situation by offering a real opposition to reactionary politics. To succeed in the current period, it will need consistent opposition to war, austerity and racism, the oppression of women and every other form of oppression and tackling climate change will also have to be central to its politics.
The Labour government should not be echoing the agenda of Reform UK – amplifying the myths about “grooming gangs” or migrant crime. Leaning into sensationalist misinformation about child abuse or pressing ahead with citizenship stripping is stoking the xenophobic tinder that far-right groups exploit.
Voters say Labour is losing votes because it is too right-wing. It is mainly losing votes to its left or deterring voters from voting at all. It is right-wing myth-making that Labour’s is losing votes solely or mainly to Reform.
The racist character of the government’s agenda is revealed with almost every policy decision. It is continuing its ineluctable surge to the right generally, but particularly in relation to its attitude to the Muslim community.
