The claim from the Tory government and its army of media supporters that the latest Budget has ended austerity is completely false. It is very important for the left and the labour movement as a whole that they grasp the character of the new attacks to come, so that they can resist them.
The Tories have launched an attack on all working people with their new immigration policy. It will probably do serious damage to our public services, even if big exemptions and exclusions from the new restrictions are finally put in place.
Behind all the populist rhetoric about restricting cheap labour, the major risk is that the system is actually designed to create a new, lower category of worker in this country, akin to something like the gastarbeiter (“guest worker”) status in Germany.
The British working class now faces the sustained and determined offensive by the Johnson Tory government to ‘Americanise’ British society that was always the aim of Brexit. The seriousness of this offensive makes it even more vital that Rebecca Long-Bailey and Richard Burgon are supported for Labour’s leader and deputy leader.
Richard Burgon is the best candidate for Deputy Leader of Labour, who will ensure Labour fights the Tories’ savage agenda of austerity, racism and war.
Rebecca Long-Bailey is the only Labour leadership candidate who can ensure Labour puts up a serious fight to defend people against the savage attacks being prepared by Boris Johnson’s Tory government.
Merely a few days after his election victory Johnson has already made crystal clear what ‘Get Brexit done’ means. The section of his rapidly spelt out agenda which attracted immediate left-wing media attention is the assault on working class rights in Britain. But considered internationally deeply threatening is that Johnson is adding Britain to Trump’s US, Bolsonaro’s Brazil, Saudi Arabia and other forces in a policy heading to climate catastrophe.
