Migration is an economic benefit

The leadership of the Leave campaign in the UK’s EU referendum has focussed its fight on whipping up hostility to immigration and encouraged a reactionary political climate. It’s main argument, that immigration lowers living standards, is not true, but this is not being challenged by the Cameron leadership of the Remain campaign.

Labour has finally formed a coalition administration for the Welsh Assembly (Cynulliad Cenedaethol Cymru). Unfortunately, this coalition administration is with the sole Lib Dem Assembly member elected rather than Plaid Cymru.

The results of the 5 May elections are good news for Labour. It regained the post of London Mayor, beat the Tories in the English local elections and remains the largest party in the Wales Assembly. It was unfortunately further set back in Scotland, which was predictable given its right wing policies there.

Labour’s campaign is correctly focussed on housing and public transport, two of Londoners’ most pressing concerns about living standards. The Tories meanwhile are trying to whip up prejudice against Khan’s race and Muslim faith, waging a smear campaign accusing him of extremism and links to terrorism. Reject Tory austerity and racism – Vote Labour!

Despite the ongoing and relentlessly negative noise – mainly not around key political or economic issues – from our biased media, Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party has so far proven a success. In particular, the Oldham by-election was a great victory, seeing off a perceived challenge from UKIP.
