Trump’s shift on Israel’s capital – widely condemned

Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel represents a significant shift in US foreign policy. It is a violation of international law which recognises East Jerusalem is Palestinian territory that is has been under illegal Israeli occupation since 1967. It is a sharp departure from the internationally recognised basis for a two state solution, with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Livingstone and anti-Semitism: it is defending Palestine that is under attack

Israel has suffered some serious reverses in international opinion as a result of its wars on Gaza in 2008/9 and 2014, illegal settlements in the West Bank, displacement of Palestinians in Jerusalem, apartheid-style internal discrimination and Netanyahu’s refusal to compromise or entertain meaningful negotiations. Its supporters are attempting to launch a counteroffensive. At the centre of this has been the attempt to silence expression of support for Palestine by conflating criticism of Israel and Zionism with anti-Semitism.

Whilst President Obama tries to tie down support this week in advance of forthcoming Congressional votes, the US military is preparing an immense assault on Syria. US imperialism does not make idle threats, so it intends that the attack will proceed. Members of Congress are being told that a ‘no-vote’ next week, against air-strikes, would catastrophically weaken the US for years to come.

Israeli-backed insurgency suffers setbacks in Syria

Syrian government forces are currently fighting in an important battle to retake control of Qusair, a town between Homs and the Lebanese border.

The government has over recent weeks broken the stalemate and developed impetus behind a series of military and political advances. If this momentum persists imperialism’s offensive will be significantly weakened. Hence it is determined to halt Syria’s current progress, so Israel has increased its direct attacks on Syria and there is a renewed drive for stepped up support to the opposition guerrilla forces.

With Egypt intermittently rocked by weeks of violence the conditions necessary for a successful military coup are advancing.

Imperialism and its allies are exploiting mounting social instability to raise the prospect of removing President Mohamed Morsi with the military returning to power.
