The strike wave shows that there is not only an understanding that the government is responsible for the attack on living standards, but the working class is engaged in a counter-offensive of its own.
This strike wave that started last year, and has progressed across a wide range of sectors, is continuing to develop, with no end in sight. The government is being forced into making some concessions.
Huge mobilisations, against Macron’s proposed raising of the retirement age, are taking place across France. Millions of people have taken to the streets and are continuing to do do. It is an inspiring struggle to follow closely, support, and emulate.
The unions’ fight back against the attacks on living standards, have extended into this year.
Labour movement and other progressive activists should step up their activity in support of this growing anti-austerity struggle.

NEF analysis shows a fall in living standards for the lowest paid half of the population, and a big increase in incomes for the top 5% of earners. On this evidence, the point that austerity has never gone away is irrefutable. The government clearly has an interest in misleading the population on this point.
