Decriminalisation doesn’t mean deregulation of abortion. There are many medical guidelines which doctors have to follow to carry out safe and legal abortions, but when gate-keeping access to abortion comes from Victorian legislation, it’s time to update it.
The home use of the early medical abortion pills during the pandemic has been better and safer for women, it has levelled the playing field and made the NHS more efficient. It should continue.
The current pandemic, while highlighting gaping holes in the health services caused by austerity, is also exposing artificial restrictions put in place for women against the medical community’s recommendations.
We are experiencing a worsening impact of both austerity and racism. International Women’s Day is an important opportunity to remind us that women are disproportionately impacted by both.
On Friday 25 May 2018 a referendum will be held on whether or not to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the Republic of Ireland’s Constitution in order to pave the way for progressive reforms that will enable women to access safe and legal abortion in Ireland.
