This year’s local elections in Britain conclude in just over two weeks, with voters in main metropolitan areas including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle as well as other urban areas across the country going to the polls.
In Gerry Adams’ blog below he poses a major challenge for socialists and all progressive forces in Britain – ‘The Tories and the unionist leaders want to turn back the clock to the bad old days of unionist domination. So, what should the response of progressives and democrats, particularly in Britain, be to this, and to the threat to the Good Friday Agreement? The first step should be for unity of purpose in defending the Good Friday Agreement and ensuring that all aspects of the Agreement are implemented in full.’
The March visit to Britain by the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, highlighted the differences on international policies, between Theresa May’s Tories and Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour.
Jeremy Corbyn has condemned the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, backed a thorough investigation and is urging political leaders to act with calm heads and base their response to the attacks on real evidence. Given the absence of the latter he has cautioned against a new ‘cold war’ and an escalation of military spending.
Jeremy Corbyn, in his speech in Coventry today, called for the UK to be in a permanent customs union with the EU and for Britain to have a say in negotiating the bloc’s future trade deals. This move by Labour simultaneously reflects Labour’ economic priority to defend jobs and living standards and will place the Tory government under huge pressure to follow suit.
