US imperialism intensely craves Venezuela’s oil reserves, the largest in the planet.
And it cannot tolerate independence and sovereignty in its ‘backyard’.
The people of Venezuela again defeated a US-led coup. Elections in Venezuela are fair, but subject to US interference. The solidarity movement continues to call for the lifting of all US illegal sanctions and for a stop to US criminal interference in its internal affairs.
The China-Venezuela relationship has been greatly upgraded, placing Venezuela among the very highest relations that China holds with any other country.
The revival of Unasur at a summit of 13 Latin American leaders, and the rehabilitation of Venezuela, demonstrates the region’s shift back to the left – a blow to US imperialism.
We are now in the fourth wave of a left emergence since the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Even the mildest centre-left governments will be forced to address serious social crises. The test of these governments will be how they act when faced with the refusal by the forces of capitalism to solve these crises.
