There will be no end to the current dangerous impasse if the bottom line for the US is that Russia must accept NATO’s military machine encroaching further along its borders and that the people of eastern Ukraine will be denied their right to self-determination, up to and including the formation of a new state or joining Russia.
The real threat posed by Nord Stream 2 to the US is that it reduces US influence over its imperialist rival, Germany, and over an independent Russia.
Since WW2, control of energy supplies has been critical to maintaining the subordination of Japan and Germany to the United States.
Defeated in Syria and Afghanistan, and withdrawing from Iraq, the US and its allies are now stepping up their military provocations against Russia and China. Preventing imperialism from launching a serious military conflict is indispensable if humanity is to address the real challenges which it faces.
After the two-decades long war in Afghanistan the US ‘withdrawal’ will leave behind US troops, US contractors and US proxies to maintain its influence. Afghanistan, which has a border with China, is of strategic importance to the US. The US has no concern for the population of Afghanistan.
Jeremy Corbyn has condemned the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, backed a thorough investigation and is urging political leaders to act with calm heads and base their response to the attacks on real evidence. Given the absence of the latter he has cautioned against a new ‘cold war’ and an escalation of military spending.
