Xi Jinping’s speech to the 19th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party underlined China’s growing international leadership in the global battle to stop climate change. This is an important issue for humanity given the catastrophic consequences that will result if this challenge is not successfully tackled.

The importance of the Belt and Road (B&R) summit for China and participating countries is well known. What is not so widely grasped is that the B&R region is now by far the most powerful locomotive not only of the regional but of the global economy. To be precise:

This visit has attracted even greater international media attention than the normally high levels of interest in a trip by China’s leader. As the Financial Times chief foreign affairs columnist Gideon Rachman put it, “The big star of this year’s forum is certain to be Xi Jinping.”
