Women’s March Against Trumpism – 20 May

18th May 2017 Socialist Action 0

Assemble 12pm Saturday 20 May
Victoria Square in the centre of Birmingham

The anti-choice, US-inspired ‘March for Life’ is organising a ‘Life-fest’ event in the centre of Birmingham on Saturday 20 May.
‘March for Life’ might have a shiny family-friendly appearance but don’t be fooled. It is made up of extreme anti-women, anti-choice, evangelical groups which are homophobic and have links to the far right. ‘March for Life’ is styled on the US anti-abortion movement and is using the same extreme slogan ‘life from conception –no exception’. It is actively supported by US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Speakers are being flown in from the US to the march in Birmingham.

Abortion Rights screening of Vera Drake -21 January

– Imelda Staunton and Mike Leigh join Abortion Rights’ panel

Abortion Rights is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Abortion Act this year. This piece of legislation allowed women to receive safe and legal abortions for the first time avoiding the backstreet doctors and homemade remedies. This is an important stage in women’s liberation and should be seen as an part of our social history, not just for women but having knock on effects in our workplaces, universities and further legislation.

In Britain we are seeing the increasing ‘Americanisation’ of anti-choice tactics, with groups such as Abort67 (named after the year the Abortion Act was introduced and women in Britain were able to access safe, legal abortions) and 40 Days for Life are picketing and praying outside abortion clinics displaying provocative images and boasting about the women they turned away on their blogs. They are choosing to focus on women – often extremely vulnerable women – at clinics rather than involve themselves in evidence-based discussions in the media or in Parliament.

Tories attack women’s right to choose

6th November 2012 Socialist Action 0

A reactionary campaign against abortion rights has recently been whipped up by senior Tories. Backbencher Nadine Dorries MP secured a debate on reducing the abortion time limit from 24 to 22 weeks, Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt re-stated his support for a reduction in the abortion time limit to 12 weeks (in an interview with The Times [paywall]) and Minister for Women and Equalities Maria Miller stated her support for a cut to the 20 week mark.
