Ignore the hype, Trump won by default

The victory of Donald Trump has handed the most powerful office on earth into the hands of someone whose promises include a giant wall along the Mexican border, the expulsion of 11 million ‘illegal immigrants’ – roughly 6 per cent of the US workforce – ‘extreme vetting’ for any Muslim seeking to enter the country, the repeal of Obamacare, keeping existing gun laws and punishing women who seek an abortion. He denies the existence of climate change, proposes to engage in a new era of protectionist trade policies, professes to ‘love war’, and is prone to casual racism, misogyny and bigotry towards Jews, LGBT people, Latinos and any other minority group.

Brits plan to ignore human rights laws – again

17th October 2016 Socialist Action 0

The following piece by Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams was published on his regular Léargas blog. He argues that the attack on human rights lawyers by the new Tory Prime Minister should be strongly resisted. They are indispensable in establishing in truth and protecting civil liberties. Nowhere is this more true than in Britain’s former and current colonies where human rights lawyers have been murdered because they have sought to expose injustice and to defend those fighting it. As we know, the same British governments who trample over human rights overseas also severely curtail them in Britain too.

Unaccountable, contradictory and chaotic – the Tory government and Libya

By Stephen Bell

On the 14 September, the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC) published its report, ‘Libya: Examination of intervention and collapse and the UK’s future policy options’. Published immediately after David Cameron’s retirement from Parliament, the reception given to the report concentrated on his culpability for the political and economic collapse in Libya. But this convenient response ignored how deeply compromised the British government’s intervention actually is. That policy continues to evade parliamentary control; involves fighting on both sides of a civil war, and adds to the chaos facing the people of Libya.

The following article by Stephen Bell, on British policy on Yemen, was previously published by Stop the war coalition.

For some time now international pressure has been building up against the Saudi led war upon Yemen. In February this year, the European Parliament voted for an EU wide arms embargo on Saudi Arabia. Recently, 64 members of the US Congress, from both Democrats and Republicans, called upon President Obama to “postpone sales of new arms” to Saudi Arabia.
