It is not possible to comprehend contemporary US politics without understanding the peculiarities which differentiate the USA from European imperialism. The most important of these is its settler colonial origins.
The Notting Hill Carnival cannot be reduced to corporate slogans about diversity. Its joy has always been political. It says that people who were attacked, excluded, and policed will not disappear.
Colonial rule often destroyed pre-existing social and economic systems, replacing them with production oriented toward the European market.
The exploitation of enslaved Africans in the Americas and of colonised populations across Asia and Africa underpinned the industrial growth of Europe.
• The history of global capitalism is inseparable from the histories of slavery, colonialism, and settler colonialism.
• The Black liberation struggle — that is the struggle against the oppression of the people of non-European origin by the people of European origin — plus the struggle for liberation and Self-Determination, and the class struggle are clearly linked.
Anti-racists and Black Liberation activists must discuss this new situation.
A counter movement has to be mobilised, building on and extending the currently existing movements.
The new blog For Liberation, Against Racism, will contribute to that discussion.
Afin de donner un sens à ces évolutions, il est bien entendu nécessaire d’évaluer les conditions matérielles objectives qui les sous-tendent. Il est également nécessaire de comprendre les conditions subjectives fondamentales – l’état de conscience de masse – qui façonnent ces réalignements politiques.
