On Monday 16 January, following the resignation of Martin McGuinness as Deputy First Minister, the British government announced that there will be new elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly on 2 March. Events leading up to this have created the most serious political crisis in Ireland since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
Brits plan to ignore human rights laws – again
The following piece by Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams was published on his regular Léargas blog. He argues that the attack on human rights lawyers by the new Tory Prime Minister should be strongly resisted. They are indispensable in establishing in truth and protecting civil liberties. Nowhere is this more true than in Britain’s former and current colonies where human rights lawyers have been murdered because they have sought to expose injustice and to defend those fighting it. As we know, the same British governments who trample over human rights overseas also severely curtail them in Britain too.

Roger Casement was the last of the leaders of the Easter 1916 rebels to be executed. Unfortunately he was very far from the last Irish Republican to die in the struggle against British imperialism.
The struggle against colonialism is central to the struggle for socialism. Ending British rule in Ireland remains a decisive question for socialists in Britain.
Loughinisland: British death squads in Ireland exposed
An official report by the Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland has found evidence of extensive collusion between British state security forces and the gang which murdered six men in a bar in Loughisland in 1994 while they were watching a soccer match on TV.
