China has developed three distinct pillars toward Latin America: purchases of Latin American goods, Chinese investment in Latin America, and Chinese political solidarity with key Latin American governments.
China invests and provides grants in Latin America with no interference in the recipient countries’ policies. The US government pressures Latin American countries to cooperate with its global policy agenda and tries to force them to choose between Beijing and Washington.
In the West the population is at present sheltering to protect itself from Covid, entering the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression, and facing the threat of unemployment and reduced living standards. On the other side of the world in China, something going in exactly the opposite direction is occurring.
