On 25 January, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro published two tweets in a row thanking China, having previously taken a strongly anti-China stance. This dramatic shift in the tone of the President of Brazil has implications beyond Brazil itself and clearly shows us the trajectory of the impact of the US’s so-called “new Cold War” on China.

The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party have been intent on banning even the limited abortion rights Poland previously had.
The election of Armin Laschet to the leadership of the CDU is the opening shot of 2021 in the campaign to elect a new German Chancellor to replace Angela Merkel in the federal election on 26 September 2021. Over the coming months there will be intense pressure within Germany, and from the United States, over who will be the CDU/CSU candidate for Chancellor.
