The National Front at Villeneuve sur Lot : a wake up call

The by-election on 23rd June in Villeneuve sur Lot was a wake up call for the French political class. The second round run-off posed the question of whether the National Front candidate would win in the election for this Southern France parliamentary seat.

In the event, the NF candidate lost, but he nevertheless got 46 per cent of the vote in the run off against the UMP, apparently getting 7,000 more votes than in the first round, although the exact figures have yet to be released.

The forces at work in Turkey and Brazil

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Erdogan is reported as saying that the same forces are at work in the protests in his country as in Brazil. In a very fundamental way this is correct.

Israeli-backed insurgency suffers setbacks in Syria

Syrian government forces are currently fighting in an important battle to retake control of Qusair, a town between Homs and the Lebanese border.

The government has over recent weeks broken the stalemate and developed impetus behind a series of military and political advances. If this momentum persists imperialism’s offensive will be significantly weakened. Hence it is determined to halt Syria’s current progress, so Israel has increased its direct attacks on Syria and there is a renewed drive for stepped up support to the opposition guerrilla forces.

Record carbon pollution reinforces capitalism’s redundancy as a force for human progress

There can be few more compelling pieces of evidence of capitalism’s redundancy as a vehicle for human progress than the news that levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rose above four hundred parts per million (ppm) for the first time in human history last week.

Venezuela – Maduro victory means Chávista revolution continues

Nicolás Maduro, the Chávista candidate, won yesterday’s Presidential election in Venezuela.

However, Venezuela’s right wing, which coordinates with the US, is determined to escalate its destabilisation campaign, so is refusing to accept the result.
