The US is once again sponsoring a violent, right wing opposition in Latin America with the goal of overthrowing a socialist government. Millions of dollars from the US government is being poured into right wing opposition groups in Venezuela that have been leading violent protests during the past five months which have killed over 100 people.

Venezuela is convening a National Constituent Assembly to improve its current constitution. The initiative could help restore stability in the country so is being opposed by those who wish to overthrow the government.

The Hamburg G20 summit was highly revealing. G20 summits rarely provide the impulse for major new developments, and the latest was no exception. Instead they can provide an important marker point or snapshot of the global relation of forces. The most important signal from the latest G20 summit was that the relative decline of the US continues and Trump’s ‘America First’ policy is only accelerating it. As a result, other leading powers are being driven towards greater co-operation, unity on tackling climate change, and defence of trade against protectionism.

On 5 June the governments of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt imposed a blockade upon the people of Qatar. Qatar’s sole land border, with Saudi Arabia, was closed. Air space over the blockading countries was denied to Qatari planes. Access on the sea, via UAE ports, was denied. Qatar imports 98 per cent of its foodstuff, mostly through the Saudi land route.
