China developed its policies to deal with its national issues. But in so doing it has created both practical and theoretical achievements which are the world’s most advanced. Given the gigantic scale of China’s achievements anyone with sense in the world will study these intently.
The latest wave of the pandemic threatens to turn into an outright crisis for the Tory government. The new measures forced on it very significantly damage its credibility on an issue which affects the entire population very directly.
A Zero Covid strategy remains the only viable alternative to the current policy of ‘learning to live (die) with the virus’.
NEF analysis shows a fall in living standards for the lowest paid half of the population, and a big increase in incomes for the top 5% of earners. On this evidence, the point that austerity has never gone away is irrefutable. The government clearly has an interest in misleading the population on this point.
Marx designated the difference between what he termed “political emancipation” and “human emancipation” – between purely formal equality and rights in politics and the fundamental inequality and lack of rights in the real world. This classically sets out the reality of Western parliamentary democracy.
In Britain, the Omicron variant is now spreading rapidly, Covid cases and hospitalisations are on the rise, and the NHS is under severe strain.
