NATO is the core military alliance of the European and North American imperialist states structured around the predominance – increasingly brashly and recklessly asserted – of the US. Smaller direct alliances in the Pacific with Japan and S Korea, and AUKUS complement it, with Israel as a West Asian frontier state. Countries seeking to join it are aiming to become junior members of the global predators’ club.
The disastrous decision to expand NATO eastwards, and to try to include Ukraine in it, always created the strategic risk of a general war in Europe. NATO’s current actions are turning that strategic threat into a short-term one.
Iran has won the first battle in the US war of aggression against it. But it is an error to claim, as some genuinely and rightly against the US aggression have done, that Iran has yet won the war. This is based on an underestimation of the strength and ruthlessness of US imperialism.
The U.S. attack on Venezuela is merely the latest step in an increasingly open path of U.S. military aggression – the U.S. enabling Israel’s genocide in Gaza, creating the war in Ukraine through NATO expansion, following from the bombing of Serbia in 1999, the invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 and of Iraq in 2003, and the bombing of Libya in 2011.
