DSA International Committee calls on the US to reverse its ongoing militarization in the region, avoid implementing sanctions against Russia, and uphold internationally agreed upon commitments to end NATO’s expansionist drive to provide guarantees that Ukraine will remain a neutral state.
The current heightened tension has been building for some time, and results directly from western deceptions around NATO expansion at the moment of the dissolution of the USSR, which are intensified by the present day geopolitical confrontation between the western powers and the Eurasian Bloc led by China and Russia.
There will be no end to the current dangerous impasse if the bottom line for the US is that Russia must accept NATO’s military machine encroaching further along its borders and that the people of eastern Ukraine will be denied their right to self-determination, up to and including the formation of a new state or joining Russia.
This interview with a member of Borotba, a Ukrainian left-wing organisation, analyses the situation of the left in the east of Ukraine in the ‘Peoples Republics’. It points up the role of Russia in holding back any developments to the left, including blocking the recently refounded Communist Party in east Ukraine from standing in the elections held in October precisely because it has mass support and would probably have won. However, it should also be noted that it is only the pressure from Russia that forced Kiev to agree the ceasefire that significantly reduced the bombardment of eastern cities. The US is marshalling its key forces in the offensive against the population of eastern and southern Ukraine. On the ground, the Kiev-controlled armed forces have been reconstituted so that shock troop are supplemented by fighters from the far-right Right Sector. Their aim is to crush any opposition to the pro-Western government installed by coup in Kiev.
