Tragically, the COP26 process has been swept into the matrix of dangerous geopolitical tensions, driven largely by the United States in its quest to prevent China’s scientific and technological advancement. Rather than focus on the necessary energy transition, developed countries have taken to crude propaganda against a handful of developing states such as China and India.
It is likely that COP26 will be a failure.

The U.S. is clearly the world’s worst per capita major carbon emitter not only in historic terms, which is relatively well known, but also in current terms. The U.S. attack on China and India, the first of which has per capita carbon emissions 46% of the U.S. and the second of which has per capita emissions 12% of the U.S., is therefore a grotesque frameup.
The starting point in the fight against a climate change should be that it is the advanced countries that must make by far the biggest proportional reductions in CO2 emissions.

The IEA World Energy Outlook 2021 sets out in very clear terms and stark figures what the world needs to do to keep below an average temperature rise of 1.5C; and how far short we are falling. It envisages the total investment required will have to rise to $4 trillion a year by 2030 to achieve Net Zero by 2050.
